Wood & Co is biggest foreign trader in Warsaw
Two and half years after Prague-based Wood & Company recommenced trading in the Polish capital, it received an award from the WSE for the highest equity turnover in 2007 by a broker based abroad, after securing 10% of foreign flows there. Wood & Company’s market share increased to 3.5% in the last month of 2007 from 1.14% in December 2006. Over the year, its turnover more than tripled to PLN 10.4 billion.
With a market capitalisation of $242 billion, Poland is the biggest stock market among the new EU member countries, and it surpasses many developed European markets in terms of IPO activity.
“We are not just a Czech broker anymore. We are pleased to see our market share growing outside of our home market,” says Andrea Ferancova, Wood & Company's Director of Equities and Partner. “This year we want to further strengthen our position in central and southeastern Europe.”
Wood & Company has long been of the two biggest players on the Czech market, which continues to represent the largest part of the brokerage’s overall turnover. Securities trading and corporate advisory have been the firm’s core activities since it was founded in 1991. In addition to Warsaw and Prague, Wood & Company is a member of the Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia and Ljubljana exchanges, as well as the Wiener Börse and Deutsche Börse. Wood & Company was the first investment house offering electronic Direct Market Access to regional stock exchanges.
In Poland, Wood & Company would like to boost its market share to at least 5% in 2008. The broker is active in both mid-caps and blue chips there, and is a market maker in three Czech-Polish dual listings – power producer CEZ, textile maker Pegas Nonwovens, and real estate developer Orco.
December was a very strong month for Wood & Company – not just in Warsaw, but throughout the region. The firm ranked 3rd in Budapest terms of traded volumes.
